Permits for Closures, Entrances/Curb Cuts, and Occupancies

The Municipality of Kincardine must grant approval before any roadway or sidewalk may be closed, whether it's for construction or an event.

Permits must be filled out and submitted a minimum of 7 business days prior to the intended closure date.

If you require assistance or have questions about whether or not you need a permit, please contact our operations division by e-mail or at 519-396-3468.

A driveway or property entrance is an access right given to the landowner by the authority in charge of the road. An Entrance Permit Application must be submitted and approved for entrances onto municipal roads and are required for:

  • new construction
  • changing design or location
  • change in use (i.e. from agricultural to residential)
  • temporary access
  • any work requiring the curb to be cut

All entrance ways shall be constructed in a professional and responsible manner in accordance with municipal standards and specifications following legislative safety requirements.

You must ensure that all information on your application is complete including:

  • contact information
  • location of the proposed entrance - lot, concession, Township, road name, civic address and/or nearest 911 number (if possible), and roll number
  • staking of the proposed entrance to facilitate site inspection
  • mapping which will include lot location, road name, indication of distance from lot lines, as well as natural features and direction.

If you're a contractor or homeowner planning some improvements that may affect public road, sidewalk, or boulevard to be blocked in any way, you need to apply for a Road Occupancy Permit.

This can include blocking access, disrupting traffic flow for vehicles or pedestrians, or:

  • placement of a moving container or dumpster
  • storage units for short periods used for construction or landscaping beyond the limits of private property
  • crossing the boulevard to gain site access where there's no depressed curb or paved driveway
  • where workers or equipment may be in the roadway to support construction or other activities
  • where the sidewalk is blocked for pedestrians

If you're hosting an event that requires roads or sidewalks to be closed, you need to submit a Special Events Application. Learn more about hosting an event in the Municipality of Kincardine.
