Making Summer More Accessible in the Municipality of Kincardine

KINCARDINE, ON – Fun should be accessible to everyone, especially in the summertime. The Municipality of Kincardine continues work to remove barriers to accessibility and create an inclusive environment. Two of these initiatives focus on making the lakeside community enjoyable to everyone: Mobi-Mats and a beach wheelchair.

Mobi Mats are portable and durable rollout mats that enhance mobility for pedestrians and individuals experiencing mobility-related disabilities, including wheelchair and mobility scooter users. These are at both Station Beach and Macpherson Beach this summer. The generous support of Bruce Power, the Rotary Club of Kincardine, in partnership with the Community Foundation Grey Bruce and the Kincardine Agricultural Society make these inclusive mats possible.

The beach wheelchair, another Rotary Club of Kincardine sponsorship, is for use on sand and is fully submersible in water. Contact the Welcome Centre at 519-396-2731 or by e-mail at tourism@kincardine.ca for details on reserving the chair for free.

“Helping everyone feel welcome and able to participate fully while they’re in the Municipality of Kincardine is important,” said Clerk Jennifer Lawrie. “There’s always more work to improve accessibility and inclusion. It’s why we work together with our Accessibility Advisory Committee to continue to make improvements.”

The Accessibility Services webpage lists other inclusive features offered throughout the community including the Ring My Bell project and mapping for accessible parking, picnic tables, and washrooms.
