Municipality of Kincardine Welcomes News of Nuclear Industry Growth

KINCARDINE, ON – The Honourable Todd Smith, Ontario’s Minister of Energy, paid a visit to Bruce Power yesterday, July 5th. He, along with Bruce Power representatives, fellow provincial colleagues, and local dignitaries were on hand to announce the start of pre-development work to site the first large-scale nuclear build in over three decades.

news release from the Ministry of Energy details how the work prepares the province for rising electricity demands with Bruce Power starting community consultations needed for federal approval to determine the feasibility of new nuclear generation on its current site.

The Municipality of Kincardine is home to Bruce Power, the largest operating nuclear generating station in the world. The facility is the anchor to a world-class energy sector, provider of approximately 30 percent of Ontario’s electricity supply, and leaders in the production of medical isotopes.

“I was about 10 years old when our community began to hear about some construction that was going on down at the Point,” said Mayor Kenneth Craig. “That was the start of the nuclear industry in what is now the Municipality of Kincardine. The effect of that construction project over the last 55 years has been the driving economic force of our shoreline communities, particularly Huron-Kinloss, Saugeen Shores, and the Municipality of Kincardine.”

Members of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Lisa Thompson and Rick Byers expressed their support for the beginning of consultations which will help evaluate the suitability of the site. “These consultations are an integral step in facilitating further growth of our clean energy sector, creating good jobs close to home and ensuring Ontarians have an energy supply they can depend on,” said Thompson.

The pre-development work will take several years to complete, assessing the viability of siting up to 4,800 megawatts of new nuclear generation.

Mayor Craig continued, “it is an opportunity for our local governments to say we are also ready to take on the responsibility of fulfilling our particular role in the production of long-term, stable, clean, and affordable electricity.”
