Transgender Day of Remembrance November 20th, 2023

KINCARDINE, ON – Kincardine Pride are raising the Transgender flag for the Transgender Day of Remembrance at 11 a.m. on November 20^th, 2023, at the Municipality of Kincardine’s community flagpole at the Kincardine Branch of the Bruce County Library.

The celebration of Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on November 20th, commemorating the trans, two-spirit, and non-binary people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. It also honours those who continue to face violence and discrimination as they work for more just and inclusive communities.

The term Transgender describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at their birth. Gender identity is a person's internal, personal sense of being male or female. Gender identity does not fit neatly into those two choices for all individuals. For transgender people, the sex assigned to them at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match (source: https://www.glaad.org/tdor).

“Developing an understanding of the diversity in our community helps us become aware, rethink our assumptions, creates allyship, and fosters a sense of connection with each other,” says Sandy Blackwood from Kincardine Pride.
