Municipality of Kincardine seeks applicants for Council Vacancy

KINCARDINE, ON – At their September 11th, 2024, meeting, the Municipality of Kincardine Council had the solemn task of declaring the office of Councillor Doug Kennedy vacant following his recent passing.

The Council have chosen to fill the Councillor Ward 1 vacancy through an appointment process, which is in accordance with both the Municipal Act and the Municipality’s Council Vacancy Policy. It’s a method commonly used by municipalities to fill an unexpected vacancy on their councils.

“Interested candidates may begin exploring the process of applying on our Council Vacancy webpage,” said Jennifer Lawrie, Manager of Legislative Services and Clerk for the Municipality of Kincardine.

The application period opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, and will remain open until Friday, October 25th, 2024, at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

The term of position will become effective from the date of appointment through to the swearing in of the next Council elected in the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election. Appointment is set to occur at a special meeting of Council on November 6th, 2024, at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Municipal Administration Centre, 1475 Concession 5 in Kincardine.

“The council appointment meeting gives each certified candidate an opportunity to speak before Council. Then, during the open meeting, a vote selects from the candidates the new Councillor Ward 1. The successful candidate takes their oath of office and, through by-law, begin acting in their role,” explained Lawrie.

Those with interest in applying to become Councillor Ward 1 must:

  • Reside in or be the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Kincardine, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
  • Be a Canadian citizen;
  • Be at least 18 years old; and
  • Not be prohibited from voting under Section 17(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law.
