Municipality of Kincardine Recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
KINCARDINE, ON – The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed annually on September 30th. This day is dedicated to recognizing the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is a result of years of advocacy by those calling for justice. This day stands as a vital step in the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was selected to coincide with the Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative to commemorate and honour both the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remember those who did not.
During the week of September 23rd to October 1st, the Municipality of Kincardine will be providing information, posters, and stickers for the public to pick up at the following municipal facilities:
- Davidson Centre - 601 Durham Street, Kincardine
- Municipal Administration Centre - 1475 Concession 5, Kincardine
- Welcome Centre - 707 Queen Street
The Municipality of Kincardine is flying the Survivors’ Flag at the Kincardine Library and Tiverton’s Station 11 of the Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services from Monday, September 23rd to Tuesday, October 1st. The Survivors’ Flag, created through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, is an expression of remembrance, for residential school survivors as well as all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada. The Survivor Flag will be raised by Mayor Craig at the Kincardine Public Library at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024.
The community is encouraged to wear orange on Monday, September 30th as an expression of remembrance. Municipal buildings will lower Canadian flags to half mast from September 30th to October 1st, honouring those lost, survivors, families, and communities who continue to grieve.
