National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

KINCARDINE, ON – This Saturday, September 30th, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day selected to coincide with Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 and is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day honouring the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remembers those who did not.

The Municipality of Kincardine encourages everyone to find a way to participate in actions that create pathways to reconciliation, and wearing orange on September 30th is one of them.

During the week of September 25th to October 1st, the Municipality is providing free posters and learning resources to the public for pick-up at the following municipal facilities:

  • Davidson Centre
  • Underwood Community Centre
  • Tiverton Sports Centre
  • Municipal Administration Centre

The Municipality of Kincardine is also flying the Survivors’ Flag at both the Davidson Centre and at Tiverton’s Station 11 of the Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services from September 15th to October 2nd. The Survivors’ Flag, created through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, is an expression of remembrance for residential school survivors as well as all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

Municipal building will lower Canadian flags nationwide to half mast on September 30th to October 2nd in further remembrance and honouring those lost, survivors, families, and communities who continue to grieve.
