National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

KINCARDINE, ON – September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, selected to coincide with Orange Shirt Day. An Indigenous-led grassroots commemoration, Orange Shirt Day honours the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remembers those who did not.

The Municipality of Kincardine is committed to actions that create pathways towards reconciliation with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

As part of this journey, the Municipality is offering a variety of learning circles throughout the year with the next in the series connecting participants to the 7 Grandfather Teachings with the help of Elder Shirley Johns. Joining her is Diane Giroux, Giiwe Coordinator at M'Wikwedong Indigenous Friendship Center in Owen Sound, who will offer suggestions on creating reconciliation pathways within an organization.

This event will take place on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Municipal Administration Centre at 1475 Concession 5, Kincardine.

Register online at: www.kincardine.ca/Learning-Circle-Sept-13 or by contacting Lorie Fioze by telephone at 519-389-1857. There are a limited number of spots available for participation.

The Municipality of Kincardine will also fly the Survivors’ Flag at both the Davidson Centre and at Tiverton’s Station 11 of the Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services from September 15th to October 2nd. The Survivors’ Flag, created through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, is an expression of remembrance, for residential school survivors as well as all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

Municipal buildings will lower Canadian flags nationwide to half mast from September 30th to October 2nd, honouring those lost, survivors, families, and communities who continue to grieve.
