Statement from Mayor Craig: The Passing of Vernon Roote
Statement from Mayor Craig:
The Passing of Vernon Roote
August 9, 2023
On behalf of Council and the Municipality of Kincardine, I would like to extend our condolences to friends and family of Vernon Roote.
Vernon Roote was the former Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation Chief and died August 4th, 2023, at the age of 74.
Vernon was devoted to his community and his presence will be missed by all those who knew him. His life work will continue to have an impact as he shared teachings about the history and modeled behaviours that inspired people to “walk in a good way” with each other, with our environment and our conscience.
On a personal note, I was fortunate to have personally spent time with Vernon, as he and I used to play on a Thursday night pool team here in Kincardine together. He was a good player!
Not only did my game improve, but it was a gift to learn from him during our times together. It was Vernon’s nature, after all, to share his knowledge. It was part of what made him an exceptional leader and elder in his community.
The legacy he leaves is truly inspirational; one which we can all look to as we continue to learn and grow on our own journeys.
